Proton e.MAS 5 Dominates Malaysia’s EV Market With 4,770 Units Sold

The Proton e.MAS 5 has made a huge impact in Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) market, recording 4,770 registrations in August 2026.

Out of 8,833 EVs registered nationwide, the e.MAS 5 alone accounted for around 54% of the total EV market, selling more units than all other EV models combined.

The gap between the e.MAS 5 and its closest rivals was also significant. Tesla Model 3 ranked second with 659 units, followed by the Proton e.MAS 7 with 613 units. The Tesla Model Y recorded 507 units, while the Zeekr 7X completed the top five with 308 units.

What makes the achievement even more impressive is that the e.MAS 5 ranked fifth among all cars sold in Malaysia in August, competing directly with popular petrol models such as the Perodua Bezza, Axia, Myvi and Proton Saga.

This marks the first time an EV has entered Malaysia’s overall top-five best-selling cars, showing that interest in electric vehicles among Malaysian buyers could be growing rapidly.

With such strong sales in its first major push, it will be interesting to see whether the Proton e.MAS 5 can maintain its momentum in the coming months.
