Proton Begins Local Assembly of eMas 7 PHEV at Tanjong Malim Plant

Proton has officially commenced local (CKD) production of the eMas 7 PHEV at its dedicated New Energy Vehicle (NEV) plant in Tanjong Malim, marking another significant milestone in the company's electrification journey. The move comes around five months after the plug-in hybrid SUV was first introduced in Malaysia as a fully imported (CBU) model.

While official pricing for the locally assembled model has yet to be announced, Proton has confirmed that the CKD version remains largely unchanged mechanically, with only a minor equipment upgrade for selected variants.

The Premium and Premium Plus variants now feature front massage seats with six massage modes, offering improved comfort for occupants. Meanwhile, the entry-level Prime variant continues without any changes.

Under the hood, the powertrain remains identical to the CBU model, pairing a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 99 PS and 125 Nm with a front-mounted electric motor delivering 218 PS and 262 Nm, for a combined system output of 262 PS and 262 Nm. The plug-in hybrid system continues to use a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).

A key development is that the engine, Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), and electric motor are now assembled locally at Proton's Tanjong Malim facility. Additionally, 30% of the vehicle's components are now sourced locally, reflecting Proton's ongoing efforts to strengthen Malaysia's automotive supply chain.

Customer deliveries of the CKD Proton eMas 7 PHEV are expected to begin next month, with production initially prioritising the Premium Plus variant due to strong customer demand.

The Proton eMas 7 PHEV continues to lead Malaysia's plug-in hybrid market, having sold more than 4,500 units and accumulated over 11,000 bookings since its launch, making it the country's best-selling PHEV to date.
