Proton achieves 100,000 sales annually for six years in a row.
Proton continues its strong performance by reaching the 100,000 sales milestone for six years straight. After selling 12,690 units in August 2024, the total annual sales climbed to 101,489 units.
This accomplishment strengthens Proton's standing as the second-largest automaker by sales volume, with an anticipated market share of 19%.
A significant contributor to Proton's impressive results this year is its B-segment SUV, the Proton X50. Following the Running Change (RC) update introduced in June, the refreshed 2024 Proton X50 RC has garnered positive reviews from local automotive enthusiasts, with 2,440 units sold in August 2024 alone.
This marks the third consecutive month the X50 has exceeded 2,000 sales, bringing its year-to-date sales total to 15,229 units, making it the most popular SUV in Proton's current range.
Despite strong performances from various models, the Proton Saga remains the top-selling Proton vehicle. In August 2024, Proton delivered 6,211 units of the Saga, bringing its year-to-date sales to 48,904 units—a 6.7% increase from last year's figures. Other Proton sedans also saw solid sales, with the S70 selling 1,205 units and the Persona achieving 1,452 units delivered.
Additionally, Proton's flagship SUV, the Proton X90, recorded encouraging sales last month, with 241 units sold and a year-to-date total of 2,507 units. This positions the X90 as the leading D-segment SUV for the year.
Proton attributes its strong sales growth to the country's stable economic conditions and remains optimistic about the future prospects of the local automotive industry.
“Given the strong domestic economy, with GDP growth expected between 4% and 5%, Proton supports the Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) new forecast of 765,000 units for the full-year car market. We’re optimistic about the growth potential for the local auto industry. Our sales surpassing 100,000 units for the sixth year in a row, with four months still to go, shows how well the market is doing,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.
“Even though there’s more competition from new brands this year, our updated models have been very well received, with strong bookings across the country. This success proves that our updates are working and highlights the importance of having a large network of 3S/4S service centers to meet customer needs,” the CEO added.
Proton is seeing positive growth in its export markets as it works to expand internationally. In August, Brunei had its best-ever sales month with 120 units sold.
The Proton Saga continues to be the top seller abroad, with 140 units exported in August 2024. Overall, Proton has exported 2,110 units since January.
“Brunei has been one of our first export markets, and we’ve had a long history there, starting with the original Proton Saga. Thanks to the efforts of Pad Motors Proton Brunei and our new advanced models, the brand is seeing strong sales and has set a new record for August,” said Roslan Abdullah.
